What you know about your valley

Measurement gets us this far. Pilots know the rest.

We derived sectors, thresholds and the MeteoSwiss index from data. What no measurement gives is what you know from flying there for years. Answer a single question if that is all you have, it still helps.

Which valley? Which site mainly? Where is the trap? The place people say never gets foehn, and does. In the Valais it is Vercorin: foehn measured 3 % of the time against 69 % at Montana, seven kilometres away. This is the most useful question here. Which launches feel it first? And in what order it works down the valley, if you have noticed. What do you watch, and how far ahead? Which stations, which graph, which sign in the sky. How do you say it locally? The local vocabulary. In the Valais it is «le fœhn rentre», «rive droite / rive gauche».
