how to use
The gestures you would not guess. Everything else should explain itself; if it doesn't, tell me.
Reorder your favourites
The green star adds or removes a station from your favourites. The six-dot grip on the right is for reordering: keep your finger on it and slide the card into place. The order is remembered on this device.
Sort the lists
Two sorts on every tab: Distance (nearest station first, your location is requested at that moment) and Speed (strongest mean wind first). Tapping the active chip returns to the tab's normal order.
Read a station card
Green: mean wind. Amber: gusts, with the gust factor (×1.4 = gusts 40% above the mean, rowdy air). Blue: where the wind comes from. The grey chip shows the age of the reading; a station silent for long goes grey, because a frozen calm is not a calm.
The wind rose
On a station page: each dot is a reading from the last hour, the newest fully visible, older ones fading. A tight cluster = steady direction; scattered dots = it is turning. In the centre, the hour's mean and max.
The DABS that answers
Tap a red marker on the chart (or just next to it, it aims for you): the validity times in UTC and the zone text appear at the bottom. Fullscreen then ×2 to zoom, drag the image with a finger. Tap elsewhere to close.
Pin a foehn graph
On the Foehn page, the star pins a graph to the dashboard. The ones you check often (the pressure difference, the Gütsch station...) then wait for you on the home page.
Search all stations
The All tab filters by country (Switzerland, Switzerland and neighbours, the whole network) and the magnifier searches names, tolerating typos. The number on each filter says how many stations it shows.
Share your favourites
The ☰ menu builds a link that carries your favourites list. Open it on another phone (or send it to a friend): the list installs as-is. It is also the way to get your favourites onto a new device.
Create a wind alert
On a station page, tap the bell: you set your window (direction, mean wind, gusts) and a notification goes out when a reading enters it. IMPORTANT on iPhone: notifications only work if windy is installed on your home screen (iOS 16.4 or newer, see below). On Android, Chrome or Firefox is enough. On a computer (macOS, Windows) the system must ALSO allow the browser's notifications (System Settings → Notifications), on top of the site permission; a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode hides them.
Your window, your thresholds
Every setting is optional. An alert goes out when the reading enters your window, then silence while it stays inside: they will not spam you.
Install windy on your home screen
Installed, the app opens in one gesture, and on iPhone it is the requirement for receiving alert notifications. Depending on your iOS version, Share sits directly in the toolbar or behind '...' as below.
1. In Safari, tap the '...' button.
2. Choose 'Share'.
3. Choose 'Add to Home Screen'.
4. The windy icon appears on your home screen.
1. In Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu.
2. Choose 'Add to Home screen'.
3. The windy icon appears on your home screen.
Screenshots are in French; the app also runs in German, Italian and English.
